Blind Girl Hacks; 10 Fab Uses of Vaseline.

There are some things in life which I believe every girl needs,; yes you’ve guessed it Vaseline! Not only is it cheap but vaseline is multi-purpose! here are just a few ideas that I’ve found Vaseline to be fantastic for! And as a blind girl, it’s a double positive!

Primer

This may not be an original thought for those of you who are into beauty and make up, but as an emergency Vaseline can be used as a primer! It gives your face the smooth and glossy look, while also moisturising your skin!

Fix Eyeliner

Whether you’r a pro at putting on eyeliner, or you are just starting out with experimenting Vaseline is a handy way of removing excess eyeliner. Simply uses a cotton bud with a small amount on the end and rub the thickest part of the eyeliner.It will remove it, without messing up the rest of your make up!

Teeth

Sounds a bit strange right? But applying a little amount on your top 6 teeth before applying lipstick will make sure that not only will your lips not stick to your teeth, but if you do have a lipstick stain it can be quickly removed!

 




Lipstick

Applying a thin layer of Vaseline on your lips a minute or so before applying lipstick will give your lipstick extra hold and extra shine.

Lipstick II

Not a big fan of lipstick, or just forgotten it?
Use a cotton bud or lipstick brush and add about a pea-sized amount of Vaseline to the tip.
Using your finger add some eyeshadow to the brush/bud, and gently mix the two. You can now apply your new lipstick shade to your lips.

Highlight/Shine

Add Vaseline to your brow line, cheekbone and cupids bow to give that highlighted/shimmer effect.

Makeup Remover

If your make up isn’t budging with soap and warm water, apply Vaseline to the area and gently wipe with a cotton pad. Be careful around your eye area!
Applying Vaseline to your eyelashes helps give a glossier shine as well as helps the lashes to grow!

Nails

Applying nail polish can be a pain, especially with limited or no vision. Make sure to put a healthy amount around each nail before painting them, it stops the nail polish from staining the finger, and makes the excess easy to remove with a cotton pad.

NailsII

Gently massaging Vaseline into your nails is a great way of keeping your cuticles soft and healthy! If you’re lucky enough to not get varnish on your fingers, use the excess to rub into your cuticles, instead of removing it!
Make sure your nails are dry first! 🙂

Perfume

Applying Vaseline on your sweet spots beforehand, such as wrists, inner elbow and collarbone, keeps the fragrance lasting longer throughout the day.
Don’t rub your perfume, dab it!

How do I use the sensse hot and cold facial bar?

After Reading the instructions I put the bar on charge for the recommended six hours. There is a light to indicate the bar is charging. Once it is fully charged both the stand and and bar will go the same colour.
Scrape hair back and wash face and hands with hot soapy water.
Towel dry your face and apply moisturiser.
Put a P sized amount of your moisturiser onto the round metal slate at the top of the bar.
There is only one button on the device, press and hold force three seconds, this will activate the hot mode.
Press the bar with the moisturiser on the metal plate to your face.
Gently run it around your entire face, and under your chin. Be careful and sensitive when applying it to your eyesockets, if you have sensitive eyes do not use.
You should only use for two minutes at a time.

Press the button once and this will activate the vibration mode. This opens up your paws and helps your moisturiser sink deep into your skin.
Press the button again to activate the cold mode. This will change very quickly.
Continue the motions all over your face, the cold will close your pours.
Press the button once more, this activates the vibration mode. This cools and tightens the facial muscles, and brings blood to the surface to reduce Red/puffy skin.
Hold the button for three seconds, this will turn off the device. If you forget, it will automatically turn off after two minutes.
Clean the metal plate with a damp clean cloth.

I love the whole design and packaging of it, it’s very sleek and stylish which makes it look expensive! I am a massive fan of the white and rose gold combo and it looks great on display!

Cons:

the only thing i would say is that the pad where the gadget stands in is not very deep at all so it balances on it. This means it can get knocked off very easily, and it has to be on a flat stable service when charging.
This is the era of technology with most gadgets having a USB port/charger… However it would have been good if the company included a plug for the USB.

I really enjoy using my facial bar, it’s great for a good morning and night routine. A fab way to look after your skin and give yourself a little pampering too!

The base:

Exfoliate

You should exfoliate your face once a week to keep your skin soft as well as ensuring there are no dead skin cells flaking when you apply moisturiser.

You can use specific scrubs that work with your skin tone. It is really important to use facial scrubs that work with your skin tone as it will help decrease skin irritation and spots.

Moisturise.

Once you have exfoliated your face and neck, gently pat your face dry with a clean towel.

Start by dabbing a pea sized amount of moisturiser to your forehead, cheeks, chin and neck.
Using your fingers rub the cream into your face in circular motions, making sure to cover your eyelids, nose and cupids bow. (The skin between your nose and top lip.)

If your face feels dry or the amount of cream used was not enough, apply more.

Face:

Primer.

A primer is the base for your make up. Primer has a sticking agent in it called glyserine which is the base for your make up, it ensures your make up will last all day.
You can buy them as a spray or as a liquid which you apply by hand or with a brush.If you are not using a spray bottle, dot primer on your face as you would apply moisturiser. However do not rub it fully into the skin, leave it so it feels wet and slightly sticky to touch, this is called tacky. Doing this will allow your foundation to stay in place.

Foundation

 

There are 3 main types of foundation; liquid, mousse and powder.

Liquid: For those with dry skin.

Using the nozzle press down once onto the back of your hand. This should be enough to cover your face and neck.

Dip the tip of your foundation brush into the liquid,
Dot it around your face. 2 dots for your forehead and cheeks and 1 for your nose and chin.
Begin by using a stippling circular motion starting at the nose then move to the cheeks, chin and forehead.
Blend out to the edges of your face using short quick strokes in the same direction
Blend the edges using the stippling motion to blend along the hairline, jawline and ears.

Mousse: Mousse foundation is for normal skin.
This is a sort of thick cream. and is best applied using your fingers.

Using your index and middle finger gently scoop out the foundation. Mousse spreads far so a small amount will go a long way.
Dot your face using your two fingers2 dabs on the cheeks and forehead and 1 dab on the nose and chin.

Starting from the edge of your nose use your fingers to rub the foundation in circular motions.
Using your fingers ensures you cover your face completely and smoothly.
Continue with circular motions blending into your hairline, jawline and ears.

Powder:
For oily or combination skin.

Use a fluffy powder brush or buffing brush to apply your powder foundation.
Put the brush into the powder and swirl around 2 or 3 times.
Tap off the excess powder using the side of the compact.
From the center of your face swirl the brush in circular motions,
Blend outwards, if needs be count how many brush strokes you used to cover one side of your face and repeat on the other side.
Blend into the hairline, jawline and ears using circular motions.

Concealer:

Concealer is a way of highlighting the face and getting rid of dark circles and blemishes.
For dark under eye circles use a concealer that is 1 or 2 shades lighter than your foundation
If you have a lighter complexion use salmon tones

For blemishes or discolouration use a green or yellow concealer.
Make sure you are using the right concealer for your skin tone.
Starting from the bridge of your nosed finishing at the outer corner of your eye, draw and upside down triangle with the point finishing just above your lower eye socket.
Blend the concealer in by Gently patting the area; using your ring finger. This is your weakest finger and will not damage the delicate skin under your eyes.

If you have deep set eyes make sure to work the concealer up into the inside of your nose.This area is often missed and can leave you looking sleepy.

For a more natural daytime look and you just want to cover up your dark circles, use a lightweight concealer with a slight colour cancelling undertone. Dot the concealer and gently blend as mentioned above.
You can also use a brush to apply the concealer.

Blemishes:

Dab the concealer softly on the top of each blemish and around the blemish itself.
Blend out softly using a clean brush or cotton bud. .

Highlight and Contour.

Highlight

Highlighter makes your face look brighter,, more awake and gives you a glowy look.

You can use this alongside contouring or add a bit of bronzerto create a shimmery effect.
Draw a much smaller triangle between your brows with the base finishing where the eyebrows meet.

Draw a small line just under your eyebrow bone but but above the crease in your eyelid. This gives the illusion of larger eyes.

Draw a small line in the centre of your cheek.

Draw a small line along the bridge of your nose. This is where the light naturally hits your face but it also helps your nose look thinner, especially if you contour the sides of your nose.
Apply a thin line starting from the centre of your ear coming down diagonally towards the centre of your eye socket.
Apply a tiny amount of your highlighter to your cupids bow to make your lipstick look sharp.

 

Blusher

Blusher gives your face a healthy glow, making you look younger and more alive.
There are different types of blushers that come in several bright colours. Make sure you use colours that suit your skin tone and complexion.
To make your blush look most natural match the blusher with the type of foundation that you use.
For example if you use liquid foundation use a cream blusher.

There are 2 main places to apply blusher; the apples of your cheeks and your cheekbones.

Apples:
To find the apples of your cheeks smile, they are just beneath your eyes where your cheeks bulge. Good for slimmer faces for a healthy glow

 

Cheekbones:

They are just below the apples of your cheeks, you can find them with your fingers or a brush.

Eyes:

Eye Eyeshadow

There are three main types of eyeshadow; cream, loose and pressed.

Cream these eyeshadows work best as a base color for powder eye shadow, or for solid, single-color coverage.
Loose these eyeshadows are often where you find the most color pigment, but can be messy and tricky to work with.
Pressed these eyeshadows are the most common type of shadow, because they blend easily without being too messy.

There are a selection of eyeshadow brushes out there, which do different jobs for applying make up to your eyes.
If you’re just getting started out with make up, I suggest getting 2 brushs that you can practice with.
* Stiff flat brush:
Use this to apply eyeshadow to your entire lid. This brush is best for picking up lots of pigment and distributing it over your entire eyelid.
* Soft stiff dome brush:
This is used for applying eyeshadow to your crease and blending it outwards.

Application:

Starting from the outer corner of your eye gently dab a nude colour across your lid using the stiff flat brush. Make sure to go no further than the crease of the lid.
The crease is the small gap between the top of the eyeball and the bottom of your brow bone. You can use your finger or the brush to find that space. Then sweep back and forth in a gentle rainbow motion to ensure the area is covered.
For a pop of colour, add a brighter eyeshadow in the centre of your lid and blend out using soft strokes in the Direction of the outer corner.

Using the tip of your brush apply a small amount of white/cream coloured shadow to the inner corner of your eye, use small soft strokes to blend out gently. This brightens your eyes considerably and gives the illusion of your eyes being bigger.

Eyeliner.

There are three types of eyeliners; pencil, gel and liquid.

Pencil: this gives your eyes a sharp and a defined look. Make sure to always sharpen your pencil before applying.

Gel: glides on easily and effortlessly. They usually come in a little pot with a brush.

Liquid: gives your eyes that bold look. Liquid liners are used for precision, they may come in a tube with a brush, or a pot and pen style.

The best way to apply any eyeliner is to: sit, place your elbow on a flat surface and rest your pinky on your cheekbone. This will keep your hand nice and steady during application.

Application:
Applying eyeliner can take a lot of practice so don’t be disheartened if it’s not perfect.

Start on the outer corner of your eye. Look the opposite way two the eye you are applying, for example if you are starting with your right eye, look across to your left. This actually Titans your eyes naturally so you can get a smoother finish.
Gently spot or dash along the eyeline until you reach the inner corner.
Connect the dots or dash to complete the line.

If you are totally blind this method may not work for you, so I would suggest starting from the outer corner and doing small strokes until you reach the inner corner of your eye. Again, this will take a lot of practice, and do not be disheartened if it is not straight or equal. Just ask a sighted person to give you guidance on correcting it

Once you feel confident putting eyeliner on your lower lids, feel free to try applying liner on your upper lids following the same process. I would suggest keeping your eyes closed and looking down, this naturally Titans the eyelid and gives a smoother finish.

What color eyeliner should you use for each eye colour?

Green:
Red is a complementary color for green, so choose shades that have red undertones, such as purple: Lavender, plum or violet. You can also use light brown or bronze.
Blue:
Colours that compliment blue are; purple, silver,, grey and brown.

Hazel:
Rich, autumnal colors like golds, browns, and greens as these colours would enhance the color of your eyes.

Brown:
Use shades of blue/purples and metallic tones of golds, browns, and bronze as these will make the eyes stand out

Mascara:

Choosing a mascara can become a bit of a minefield, but don’t be put off, you just need to simplify what it is you want from a mascara.
Do you want to volumise or lengthen your lashes?
What colour do you want? There are so many colours to choose from, but a popular choice is black, or brown for those who are fair skinned.

Do you sweat a lot or are you in an environment that’s damp or wet? If so, you will need a waterproof mascara.
You will also need a kind and gentle make up remover, but one that can tackle your water resistant lashes.

There are a number of different brands that range in price, drugstore to high-end. Once you have decided what type/colour you are going for, it’s time to shop around. Use the Internet, friends/family and even beauty representatives to discuss your wants and needs in a mascara.

Curl your eyelashes first.

Start by curling your lashes with a lash curler. Using your thumb and forefinger open the eyelash curlers. Keeping your eye open, place the curler at the base of your upper lashes.
Close the curler gently onto your lashes, bringing your finger and thumb together, and close your eye. Hold it in place and gently tilt your wrist up so the handle is at 90° to your eye. Hold for a few seconds then gently release by pulling your thumb and forefinger apart.

Application:
Before applying any I make up you should use primer.
Primer for your eyes is invaluable. It helps keep your eyeshadow intact, so you do not need to reapply during the day.

Taking the tube of mascara, swirl the wand around to coat the bristles with the mascara properly. Make sure you’re not pumping your wand into the tube repeatedly. This pushes air into the tube where bacteria contaminates the wand. this also makes the mascara clumpy, and it dries out faster.

Open your eyes as wide as you can and look towards the ceiling; starting at the roots, apply the mascara with a wriggling motion. This ensures that there is more volume at the roots, and your lashes don’t feel weighed down.

Place your other hand under your eye to help guide your dominant hand in, so you can find your lashes.
Alternatively, buy sample packs of mascara so the wand is shorter and the bristles are smaller, this can help when you are first learning to apply mascara




There are 3 ways to apply make up to your eyebrows; brow mascara, eyeshadow and brow pencil.
You can buy eyebrow mascara from anywhere that sells make up, eyebrow mascara is essentially a miniature version of mascara for your brows.
After getting rid of any XS on your wand, start from the inner corner of your brow and do short strokes through the eyebrow hair.

For those who would like to try darkening their eyebrows, but don’t yet feel confident enough, using a brow mascara or pencil, you can use your eyeshadow that matches the colour of your hair.
To do this; dip a thin eye brush into your eyeshadow palette, and tapping off any XS.
Starting from the inner corner of your bro follow the shape of your natural brow using small strokes of the brush until you reach the tip.

Pencil:
Hold a pencil point up and vertical against your nose to see where your eyebrow should begin. The edge of the pencil that is closer to your nose marks the line where your brow should start.

Locate the ideal end point of your brow, which should be at a 45-degree angle from the outer corner of your eye. Still holding the pencil against the side of your nostril, pivot the point of the pencil away from your nose and to the outer corner of your eye. That is where the tail of your eyebrow should be.

Lips.

There are several types of lipsticks, some include; satin/sheer, matte, liquid, Cream and gloss.
Saturn/Sheer: These are oil base lipsticks that moisturise lips, but need to be reapplied often.
Matte: these are bright and bold lipsticks that give a flat and non-shiny look.
Cream: good for women with small lips, it gives the fuller lip affect. It is not shiny but gives a creamy look.
Gloss: gives the lips a shine and enHances th shape. Good for women who have small or thin lips.
Liquid:
It contains the pigment of a lipstick and the slide and Sheen of a gloss.

It’s recommended that you find a lipstick that is 2 shades darker than your natural lip. To test this out put a small amount of lipstick on your bottom lip and see if it is 2 shades darker than your top lip..

Pink-skinned girls should opt for cherry red. Those with olive skin can wear fire-engine red. Dark skin looks great with deep reds.

Application:

You should always apply lip balm before beginning your lip make up. Depending on the lipstick you are going to use, you may need to dab off the XS with a tissue.
This moisturises your lips, and also acts like a primer for the lipstick.




Lip liner:

Choose a nude or a colour that matches your lipstick perfectly
To get the best look you will want to make your lips taut over your teeth and opening your mouth wider than usual.
Begin by making a cross on your upper lip at the point of your cupids bow.
From there use small thin strokes and follow the entirety of your upper lip line, making sure to go right to the corners of your mouth.
For your lower lips start from the corner of your mouth and work your way in to the plumpest part of your lip you can repeat this on the other side if your hand isn’t steady enough.
Lipliner gives your lips definition and also stops your lipstick from running, or bleeding, as it is known.

Lipstick:

To give your lips definition, repeat the cross at your Cupid’s bow.
Slowly blend the lipstick over your upper lip ensuring that you keep within the lip liner, and follow down to the corner of your mouth.
On your lower lip start from the corner of your mouth and blend to the centre of your lip.
Rub your lips together; this makes sure your lipstick is blended equally and has a natural finish.
If you feel there is too much lipstick, fold a piece of tissue in half and gently clamp your mouth around it. This will take of any excess, and is called blotting.

#GuideDogDiaries Day 1

Yesterday was the day I began my journey with my first guide dog Ida!
I put the picture of my gorgeous pup on Instagram at the weekend and got a beautiful response from lots and lots of people, so thank you to everyone who liked or commented!

I wrote a post recently about guide dogs, you can check it out here! 🙂

I Arrived at the hotel at 11:20 with thanks to a volunteer guide dogs’ driver called Jake.
I waited in the reception, where I met Adam, the other person on class. Before long our rooms were ready, we started unpacking, getting a custom to the very spacious room and had orientation around the hotel. This is not only to make you as a visually impaired person feel comfortable getting around the hotel, but necessary for knowing where you are, so you can give these instructions/commands to your dog.

A relaxed lunch and a run through of the week ensued before the real fun began…

My trainer, Mikyla, went to collect the 2 dogs, giving us enough time to get nervously excited for their arrival!

When Ida arrived, I ignored her. When she settled and Mikyla let her off the lead, she was allowed to run around. I stayed quiet and watched her investigate.
This is good practice for allowing your Guide Dog to become accustomed to the new environment: not to be overexcited or overstimulated by you, and most importantly it gives them a chance to explore the new sites and sounds around them which they have not encountered before.
It was cute watching her flit between exploring the hotel room, to her bone, and saying hello to me.
As there are two of us in class, the trainer takes it in turns to spend time with you working with a guide dog, everything from obedience training to going to the toilet.

I was then left alone with Ida and the trainer spent time with Adam and his new guide dog.
This was a chance for Ida and I to bond.
Ida wasn’t much interested in me, she was more sad that her friends were across the hall and she wasn’t getting to spend time with them!

A guy dog always has a good bond with their trainer, and this can make them anxious when The trainer leaves them in a strange place, with a strange person: that would be me.

So whining Occurred.
We were warned by Mikyla that separation anxiety could happen, you just have to be patient with the dog and tell them well done when they come to you or stop whining.

We had some cuddles and play, but things vastly improved when I put her gentle lead on, and later feeding her…
Ida loves wearing her gentle lead so much, she shoves her nose in it without prompting… She does this cute little wriggle to shimmy it up her face which then in turn makes her face go to the ground so you have to coax her back up to finish putting on the rest of the lead. This part clips towards the back of the head and the lead rests gently behind her ears… The lead is designed specifically to lay on top of the pressure points at her ears, when they are stimulated it releases in dauphins, making the dog happy and excited to be wearing it.

We started off with some general obedience walking up and down the corridor. A Guide Dog on a gentle lead is very different to a dog in harness.
A Guide Dog on harness knows that she is working and is guiding you. When the dog is wearing a gentle lead this is you walking alongside the dog and keep them from being distracted.

I learned a number of ways to keep her attention and obedience.
I gave her her dinner, under the supervision of Mikyla. Ida decided that she was too hungry to wait for me to give her the signal to eat. Luckily my trainer intervened, and gave me some tips on what to do if it happens again.
What a little guzzle chops she is! 😉

I took her to the toilet, then it was time for us to go eat dinner… She was very much well-behaved, impressively so considering her four-legged friend was sitting opposite her!

Overall, I would say it has been a good first day, The more time she and I spend working together, the more she understands my quirks, and I hers, And the progress we are beginning to make.
I can’t wait to see what The next two weeks will bring! 🙂




Things I learnt:
•Come put on: another way of saying forward when off harness.
•Off: to stop the dog jumping, licking, essentially discouraging that behavior.
•Wait: Makes her stop and wait until she gets the command to continue (come).
•Steady: saying this very slowly gets the dog to slowdown.
•Down: gets the dog to lie down.
•write up: gets the dog to move closer to the object.
•Leave it: encouraging the dog to not let her scratch or be distracted by something.
•Spending: means to go to the toilet.
•Saying busy encourages her to go to the toilet
•Benching: using the dogs lead to tie to the chair leg or similar object, making sure she cant move from under the table.

Sorry For My Absence

I’m sorry for my absence. I’ve been contemplating writing this for a while now. But i’ve been holding back.
The reason for this is that i’ve begun overcomplicating things in my own mind.

I started this blog to share with you the rollercoaster ride that seems to be my life. I wanted to share everything from the highs to the lows hopefully attempting to show that although having a disability sucks sometimes, there’s a lot in life for us all to be grateful for, and in my case, find the funny side of it all.

As more time went on I realised I didn’t just want to share my story but share other people’s stories too.
I wanted to be a platform for people to learn something new, become more open minded and even to be a resource to for those who may be seeking it.

I have a thirst for knowledge and a passion to educate and support others.I put my energy into creating content that I hoped would be of use to others, and put my own thoughts and stories on the back burner, until I thought they would be of use.
I’m open and honest on this blog and fingers crossed it’s somewhat entertaining…

But i’ve been overcomplicating things… I wanted my blog to be a resource, a platform, a network and a home to share it all.
I started my campaigns in the hopes of creating a community. I wanted to be inclusive of everyone; fromAutism to arthritis or cystic fibrosis to depression, right through to those that care for people with a disability.

My #DisabilityQ&A took off, and I was excited to be sharing peoples’ stories, and i’m extremely grateful for those of you who got involved!

I tried my best to create the same enthusiasm with my other campaigns, as well as trying to encourage those with any #Disability to get on board with no avail.
I was disheartened somewhat but I had a million and one other ideas for blog posts that I thought would be interesting and useful. So I kept going.

Blogging not only became my passion, but it became an obsession. If I wasn’t writing content I was thinking of what material to use and researched it to make sure my facts were correct.
I joined in fabulous linkys, I had a tribe and I spent all my spare time talking to bloggers, reading their awesome blogs and promoting as much as I could.

I was having the best time, I was making new friends around the globe, learning new things and achieving what I hoped with my little corner of the internet.

But then I began to overcomplicate everything.

I was in a tribe that were all on a similar level to each other, constantly supporting one another and giving continuous encouragement and praise.
It was fantastic, I couldn’t have asked for a more supportive and kind bunch of people to be around.

But the further I delved into the blogging world the more I realised how technical things got.
I was knee deep in blog posts or conversations that revolved around stats, branding and monitisation.

I became interested in raising my stats; the prospect of working with brands who could help further my campaigns, give my blog exposure and in turn become the platform I hoped it could be.I thought I could really make a difference; doing reviews, giving talks and getting more people to share their trials and triumphs.

I was eager and excited at the prospect of doing something good: exposing other campaigners and my little blog being recognised for creating a community of support and resources.

So I joined blogging groups, blogging platforms that would connect brands with bloggers and even emailed PR’s and organisations to introduce myself and explained my ambitions for the blog.

And that’s where things became complicated.

I quickly realised that I was too niche for brands, PR’s and even organisations to want to work with me.
Review opportunities came in the form of fashion, kids accessories, beauty or luxury jewellery.
These reviews were not quite what I was looking for, and the odd time I thought I could work with a brand to review things from a disability standpoint I was stopped at the first hurdle.
“5000 followers minimum to apply”

I appreciate each and every follower and reader of my blog.I want people to follow me because they have a genuine interest in my blog and my campaigns.
I’m not a parent blogger, fashion or beauty blogger.
Although I have interest in fashion and beauty i’m not going to pretend I follow the latest trends… I have little to no knowledge of these things to even warrant blogging about them.

I was also getting nowhere with contacting PR’s/ organisations via email. The few times I was lucky to get a response I was congratulated for what I was trying to achieve but ultimately they did not have the time or budget to work with me.

At this point I was surrounded by fabulous bloggers acing it with stats, brand work and even getting paid work! I couldn’t be happier for my friends,but I found it increasingly overwhelming and at points unworthy to be in their company.

I wasn’t achieving what they were.

Even the bloggers I was reaching out to for my campaigns seemed no longer interested in joining them.

I became deflated and even at times frustrated… I was trying to make my blog into a place that was more about the community than it was about me.

Even though I had blog post ideas zooming around my mind and cluttering up my drafts; I started posting less and focused more on promoting the blogs myself and others had already taken the time to write.
After a while I slowed down on the amount of linkys I joined too.
I began to notice that unless I was one of the first people to link up, my posts I pretty much got ignored.
I used to spend hours reading and commenting on blogs and even sharing them over my social media, but the less often I shared or commented I began realising that people clearly weren’t interested in my blog.
It had become a: you scratch my back, i’ll scratch yours mentality…

Aside from the few people that genuinely enjoyed reading my blog, left me meaningful comments or shared my posts my stats dropped faster than an avalanche.

At this point I was done with spreading the blog love. I put 100% effort into my posts, and I wanted nothing more than to educate people who had little to no knowledge of disabilities and be a place for those with disabilities to find support and even new ideas.

By the time I had been in hospital for a week: after breaking my leg I wasn’t even sure if I should blog about it.
I’d become so wrapped up in wanting to be a space to share knowledge, ideas and experiences I thought people wouldn’t be interested in hearing my holiday dramas.

I began my blog to share my story, yet in my mind I feel it’s become something bigger than that.
I guess that it’s because I wonder often, what makes me so special that I should spend day after day talking about myself.
What is it that makes me more interesting than any other blind or disabled person out there?

And the answer is, there isn’t.

I’m just another blind person talking about their disability.

But it’s my space.

If my little corner of the internet can educate one person or give another disabled person a someone to relate to then i’ve done my job.

Stats, brands and opportunities are great, but this is no longer my focus.
Of course if a worthwhile opportunity were to come knocking, I would grab it with both hands.
But most importantly i’m grateful for my lot, and anything else is a bonus.

Are You Indirectly Discriminating?

Are you being indirectly discriminative?

The Equality Act 2010 says that indirect discrimination is:
“A practice, policy or rule which applies to everyone in the same way, but has a worse effect on some people more than others.”

Without realising it, we are indirectly discriminating…

How am I indirectly discriminating you may ask?

I will get into that very shortly but first I will give a brief explanation of what the Equality Act is.
The Equality Act 2010 was proposed as a way to combine previous legislation together to make a better stronghold on discrimination and support those who may potentially be discriminated against in the future.

There are 9 protective characteristics:
*Age
*Disability
*Gender Reassignment
*Marriage or Civil Partnership in employment only
*Pregnancy and maternity
*Race
*Religion or belief
*Sex
*sexual orientation
But for today we are focusing on disability.

Disability and Access to Websites.

The Equality Act at Section 21 includes the adoption of a single concept of the provision of a service which covers ; goods, services and facilities among other things.

While the Equality Act 2010 doesn’t expressly refer to websites the consensus has been that the reference to the provision of service does apply to commercial web.
You can find more information on the Statutory Code of Practice.
“Websites provide access to services and goods and may in themselves constitute a service; for example, where they are delivering information or entertainment.”

Websites can be a double edged sword for those with disabilities. People with sensory impairments such as blindness may choose to shop online, but much in the same way shops/ buildings can create physical barriers, a website can present the same barriers.

Screen readers are software programs giving blind and visually impaired people a way to navigate computers, tablets and phones through audio feedback.
Problems arise when user interfaces such as buttons are not labeled correctly, tables are not configured properly and images have no alternative text. Also known as Alt text attributes.

Why is this important?

Imagine the frustration of browsing the internet and being denied crucial information, such as buttons with the Twitter logo only saying link, tables reading non stop from left to right and photographs only saying the word image.

So going back to the earlier question: how am I being indirectly discriminating?

By not labelling these interfaces/ attributes correctly, you are denying visually impaired people access to your website. Whether it is intentional or not.

So what can you do?

By adding Alt text! Adding Alt text is simple; when you upload/ edit a picture on your website, you should give a clear description of the image.
Example:
Brighton Beach with a calm sea and the pier in the distance

The Alt text reads “alt=”Brighton Beach with a calm sea and the pier in the distance” which will be read aloud on all screen reader software.

Likewise, if you are adding a text based image to your website, you need to include the original text of the image as screen readers cannot distinguish the writing/text.

The Alt text reads “alt=”Flowers with the caption "Smile, and the world will smile with you” which will be read aloud on all screen reader software.

Blogging and SEO.

so you’re a blogger and you bake a delicious cake, you’ve been told to include Chocolate Cake Recipe , in every image of your tasty treat. In order for SEO to give you better rankings you need to include the Title for every image caption, right?

WRONG!!

The caption/ tag area is for Alt Text descriptions. Blind and visually impaired users need to know what the image is about, and SEO will also penalise you for not doing this.
SEO sees this as spam. In order for you to get good SEO rankings as well as being lawfully abiding, your images/ photos should have a brief description.

Most blogs are being indirectly discriminative, and not just to visually impaired people. People with other sensory impairments, motor skill problems and cognitive issues may also be indirectly discriminated against.

If you are unsure whether or not your website or blog is indirectly discriminating, you can use these free tools below to check.
Please think about your potential audience before you hit publish.
Make sure your user interfaces are labelled correctly, images have Alt text and videos have a written translation of what your video contains, especially if it is a slideshow of images.

Tell me about yourself:
Hello i’m Emily Davison, i’m 21
and I live in London, England. I’m a

MA Student, Journalist, Public Speaker, Podcast Presenter and Writer.

I’m just your average kind of girl, I’m at University studying for an MA in Children’s Literature. I love to write and read books,

What is the medical reason you have a disability?
I was born with a condition known as Septo Optic Dysplasia, a congenital condition which affects the endocrine system, hormone production system and in some cases, vision.

Have you had your Visual impairment / disability from birth?
I have, yes.

Which terminology do you prefer: Partially Sighted, Visually Impaired, Sight Impaired, Severely Sight Impaired or Blind?

I prefer to be called Severely sight impaired.

Do you have a cane, Guide Dog or neither?
I have both, but my guide dog is my number one choice of course!

If you could extinguish your disability, would you? – If not, please explain why.
I wouldn’t, it’s how nature intended me to be. I was born with my disability so I don’t know life any other way. I’ve grown to accept the person I am, disability included and I couldn’t imagine life without it.

For those who do not know much about your VI what can you see?
I have no vision in my right eye and restricted vision in my left. I have only central vision in my left eye and can only see things that are relatively close by.

How has your disability effected you?
Its more a physical kind of thing, it affects my sight as well as my immune system and I suffer with low blood sugar. So it can be very debilitating at times, but it can sometimes affect me mentally in so far that in the passed I have suffered with Depression and Anorexia as a result of it.

Do you think your disability has made you who you are today?

Absolutely, my disability has taught me so many things about who I am as a person, what I can do, my strengths and how to overcome adversity.
Its taught me to embrace diversity and not to judge people for who they are and the choices they make.
It’s taught me to try and not judge a book by its cover and remember that everyone is going through their own battles.
Its enabled me to look deep inside myself and find the strength I need to get through each day and grow as a person.
Its shown me where my passion lies and what my strengths are, I now know that I want to be an author writing books with characters that represent people with disabilities. It’s shown me that I can channel the power of words to help others like I do with my blogs and articles.
Its taught me to embrace myself for the person I am.

Is there a particular question you get asked often because of your disability? If so, please explain below.

“Are you training that guide dog?”

I get asked this a lot and I think it’s due to the fact that I am a confident person in the way I walk and act. It’s as if people cant accept the idea that someone with a guide dog can also be a confident and outgoing individual. And so anyone who is must therefore be a guide dog trainer.

What are the positives of having a disability?

The humor, being a person with a disability is very comical at times. You get into some very interesting conversations with people and some awkward situations and even though some can be utterly cringe worthy. A lot can be used as some great stories at parties.

It brings me closer to my friends and family because I do a lot of things with them or when I need help with certain things.

The perks, getting discounts on tickets to events, theatres and cinemas, I mean who doesn’t want to get into an event for cheaper?

The people I meet, I get to meet so many amazing people through networking with disability charities and organizations as well as online. I’ve met so many incredible people who have such amazing outlooks on life and stories to tell and that I am truly grateful for.

What are the negatives of having a disability?

When it can hinder the things you want to do or make it that little bit harder. Like when I have to plan a route to a venue based on which tube stations are accessible, that can be frustrating.

Having to deal with remarks about what I can and cannot do and having to deal with negative comments.

What would you say is a difficulty for you being VI / disabled?

People judging you, the hardest part about being disabled I would say is having to hear people’s remarks about your disability and how you should be because of it. It’s so difficult to deal with people who believe that being disabled means you cannot have a quality of life or do anything for yourself. I receive so many remarks from people like “you don’t look blind” or “you don’t seem disabled.” Or when I read comments on my YouTube channel from people who argue that I cannot be visually impaired and that I must be lying because according to their opinion people with sight loss cannot look attractive, wear lipstick or adorn nice clothing.

I can deal with the personal struggles that my disability pits against me, but it’s harder to cope with the stigma that surrounds having a disability that society can create.

As a person with a disability, what are the things you face on a daily / weekly basis that frustrate you?

I think the issues that frustrate me most are when I’m traveling and using public transport. I become most frustrated when I’m on a bus and there’s not enough space for my guide dog. I also find it frustrating when I’m using tubes and other services and the stations are not accessible, such as when they do not have lifts or stairs that I can access.
Using transport, as a disabled person can be extremely stressful at times and I think that is the most challenging aspect, for me, about living with a disability.

Are there any tips or tricks you use in daily life you’d like to pass on to another VI/ disabled person?

There are plenty! I’d need a year to simply write down and divulge my little tricks and tips. But, here are a few.

Organize your clothes in order of the color spectrum, in order of red all the way down to violet. Make sure you have a system to organize your clothes so that you know where everything is and you can plan outfits easier.

With makeup, try and make your life easier by doing little things to help like tinting your eyelashes and threading and tinting your eyebrows. If you struggle to apply brow products or to get the shape of your brows, use stencils, which can be bought for a few pounds on eBay. They are honestly a real life saver when it comes to brows.

If you cant see the print of something like on a package, simply take a photo of it on your iPhone and zoom in on it to see it. Its simply, quick and easy.

Do you use Assistive technology in your daily living?
I use all Apple technology including an iPad, iPhone and a Macbook. I love Apple technology because it has all the accessibility features built in and you can easily customize them to your needs and preferences.
But, I also use an application on my Mac called Claro Read which can read text to me and scan documents into accessible formats such as PDFs and Word documents.
I use a Snow electronic magnifier to read print and magazines.
In the kitchen I use a talking microwave, talking scales, talking jug and liquid level indicator.
I also use the Kindle App, which can be made accessible on an iPhone with the Voiceover features.

What piece of advice would you give to someone newly diagnosed? Or going through a deterioration in vision / or mobility?

Don’t be afraid to ask for help, asking for help is a human need and we all have to at some point or another, disabled or not.
But, the other important thing to remember is to keep an open mind, take on board all the advice you are given and the support you are offered. Do as much as you can to enrich your life and take on whatever opportunities you can to move forward and move on.

Any advice you’d like to give to a person with sight / no disabilities?

Don’t judge a book by its cover. Always keep an open mind and remember that behind each person lies a story. Until we know that story we can never begin to presume anything about who they are.

Did you seek out any specialist services / charities to help you and your family deal with your situation?

When I was 6 I began to use Blind Children UK and RNIB Talking Book Catalogue to access books and to read independently. I also used the RNIB and their services including their helpline and products throughout my school years and still do to this day. I also used the RNIB helpline for advice when applying for DSA and University related advice. When I was 17 I contacted Guide Dogs to apply for a guide dog and when I was 18 I was given a beautiful little four-legged friend by the name of Unity who is my eyes, my confidence and my freedom.

A Day In Brighton

A day in Brighton.

Back in April myself and 2 friends visited Brighton for the day. I’v never been to Brighton before so it was a nice way to explore the famous sea side town.

It was raining for the majority of our train trip so we weren’t particularly looking forward to stumbling about in the rain… Lucky for us as we got off the train and walked through the station the rain stopped!

I popped to the disabled toilets in the station before we headed off, they were clean and smelt nice 🙂 The member of staff by the barrier was very friendly also! 🙂

We were going to walk down to the Marina but as the bus stop was just across the road from the station we decided to catch the bus. A local came over to us and started chatting to us until our bus arrived, he was very friendly. The bus driver could tell that we were not locals and gave us a few ideas of where to go.

We caught the bus down to the Marina, the bus journey itself wasn’t that long, but entertaining. Not only did my friend manage to insult another passenger by announcing that she couldn’t tell whether the passenger was a man or a woman (the passenger was a woman, she had her head shaved and said she gets it a lot).
But the most exciting part for me was that the bus itself was electric and a talking bus! Great for the environment and the blind! Talking buses announce each stop and tell you what stop is next! I fell in love with the town instantly!

We decided to go for lunch and Zee-Zee’s , I have been to the chain before and as we were out celebrating my birthday I was given the deciding vote 🙂

We were seated promptly and given menu’s and our drink order was taken.
I asked for a Braille menu and the waitress went and fetched one for me; another bonus to Brighton!
After Kathy explained we were out for my birthday I was given a complimentary glass of Pressecco!

After the drinks were brought over there was a swap of waitresses, and the new waitress Maddie took our order She was very friendly and bubbly.
I ordered King Prawn Linguini in a tomato sauce with courgette shavings.

As we were placing our orders Lenny and I were trying to encourage Kathy to get a meat dish, and kept trying to tell Maddie our lovely waitress that she should bring her a giant plate of food with various meats, much to Kathy’s dismay!

I would like to point out that neither of us have any problem with people’s life choices and if Kathy were not such a great friend, we wouldn’t have wound her up! 😉

When Maddie returned baring gifts of delicious food she too joined in the banter exclaiming that there were extra prawns in Kathy’s lunch! Kathy just about freaked out and Lenny and I couldn’t contain the fits of giggles we burst into!
Not only was our lunch delicious but having such a bubbly waitress with a great sense of humour totally enhanced our experience at Zee-Zee’s Brighton!

We were far too full to order any desserts, although they were mouth watering, we may have had another Pressecco or two 😉 of course drinking all that Pressecco called for a bathroom stop.
Zee-Zee’s Brighton had very disabled friendly toilets, they were clean and smelt that way too! 🙂

After letting the last of our drinks go down and giving our tummy’s a rest we asked for the bill.
Lenny i’m sure was batting his eyelashes at the lovely Maddie!It was fun to not only chat to her but get to know her a little too!
She even gave us some money off our bill!

As we were gathering our things I mentioned to Maddie that I was a blogger, and I planned on doing a review for Brighton, and was going to do a special mention of Zee-Zee’s and their fantastic service!

She said she wanted to read it, then I suddenly got bashful! So Maddie if by some very slim pickings you do ever read my blog; thank you for making our trip to Brighton all the more enjoyable, it was lovely to meet you!

We left Zee-Zee’s and headed out towards the Marina to take a few pictures, and then we took an easy stroll along the sea front back towards the train station. There is a tram service which passed us but as it was really warm and sunny we wanted to take in the sea air and soak up the sun.

We popped into Pret- A Mange for a quick drink as the sun was beating down! :

We also dropped into a quirky music shop; there were so many cool instruments and they allowed you to pick them up and try them out! 🙂

Our entire trip to Brighton was fantastic, we enjoyed our leisurely time there, and would happily go there again, especially to explore the pier and the more touristy bits!
The locals were extremely friendly and welcoming, the services they provide are accessible and accommodating to Visually Impaired people, I would definitely recommend visiting Brighton!
